Planning in Islington
Islington is one of London's strictest boroughs — and detail decides the outcome.
Most of Islington's Georgian and Victorian terraces sit in conservation areas, and the council publishes detailed design guidance for each one. Roof profiles, window patterns and rear building lines are judged closely. We draw to that guidance precisely, so officers see a scheme that already answers their questions.

What to know before applying
Islington has over 40 conservation areas and thousands of listed buildings. Article 4 directions remove permitted development rights across much of the borough, so even windows, front doors and roof changes often need permission. Basement developments have their own policy and need a structural method statement.
Extensions & loft conversions
Mansard roof extensions, rear dormers, side-return and rear extensions are our most frequent Islington projects. The council prefers traditional mansards on unbroken terraces and resists roof additions that break a consistent roofline — we check the terrace before recommending an approach.
Conversions, HMOs & change of use
Flat conversions in Islington must meet strict space and family-housing policies, and the borough also has an Article 4 direction for small HMOs. We advise on what is realistic for your building before design begins.
Refused by Islington Council?
Send us the decision notice and drawings. We review the officer's reasons and give you a straight answer: which changes would make the scheme approvable, whether an appeal is worth pursuing, or whether the honest advice is that the project is a no-go on this site. We prepare resubmissions and manage appeals to the Planning Inspectorate.
