Planning in Tower Hamlets
Our office is in Whitechapel — Tower Hamlets is home ground.
From our studio on Greatorex Street we work across the borough every week. Tower Hamlets mixes Georgian and Victorian terraces, warehouses, post-war estates and dense new development, with some of London's most demanding conservation areas. We know the officers, the policies and the streets.
Where we work in Tower Hamlets
Whitechapel, Spitalfields, Stepney, Bethnal Green, Bow, Mile End, Limehouse, Wapping, Shadwell, Poplar, Bromley-by-Bow, the Isle of Dogs and Victoria Park.
What to know before applying
Tower Hamlets has around 58 conservation areas — among the most in London — and many listed buildings in Spitalfields, Stepney and Bow. Article 4 directions remove permitted development rights in many streets, and the whole borough has an Article 4 direction requiring permission for small HMOs. Almost any external change here needs careful design.
Extensions & loft conversions
Rear extensions, roof extensions and mansards on Victorian and Georgian terraces are typical Tower Hamlets projects. In conservation areas the council expects traditional detailing and materials; we prepare the heritage statements and drawings its conservation officers look for.
Conversions, HMOs & change of use
HMOs, flat conversions and change of use from commercial to residential are common here, and among the most closely scrutinised. We assess space standards, licensing and policy first so the scheme works for planning and for letting.
Refused by Tower Hamlets Council?
Send us the decision notice and drawings. We review the officer's reasons and give you a straight answer: which changes would make the scheme approvable, whether an appeal is worth pursuing, or whether the honest advice is that the project is a no-go on this site. We prepare resubmissions and manage appeals to the Planning Inspectorate.
